Pedometers

What is a pedometer?

It is a step counter worn at the waistline that counts steps through movement of the hip. Other types of pedometers will also calculate distance in miles and calories burned. A pedometer has a small arm inside that moves back and forth to count your steps. The pedometer computer multiplies this times the length of your stride to calculate distance (miles walked per day).

Pedometer Tips:

  • Pedometers don't work in your pocket
  • You may need to experiment with the location of the pedometer to be sure it is accurately counting your steps.
  • If it is difficult to wear this comfortably on the front of your waistline, try clipping it further to the side or to the waistline in the back making sure it is parallel to the ground.
  • If the pedometer falls in the toilet or gets washed, take out the battery and let the unit dry completely. Reinsert the battery.

Pedometers cost about $5-25 and can be purchased wherever balls or other sport equipment is sold. Consider Walk4Life which we have found to be very accurate and easy to use.

What is my goal?

You and your doctor can set your goal. Your primary goal is to move as much as possible. No matter how many steps you get, write them down. (See step log). You will be able to see your progress over time and this information is very helpful for your doctor.
